Welcome to my first bullet point post! These are shorter posts of varying lengths that go up between the larger ones with smaller bits of info that I want to get to y’all–announcements, guides to navigating the blog, etc. and they’ll all be easily accessible and chronologically organized with my full length posts, which you can navigate to using the selections at the top of the homepage. This one’s just a little life update as an appetizer for what I have coming up next.
I made the first ever post on this blog all the way back in October 2020. After months of building the site in private, I was excited to start something new, to impact the world in whatever minute way I can manage. What’s Been Withheld is more than a protest effort or a non-academic way to practice my craft, it is a public display and reminder of my own power and the things that it stems from– Blackness, knowledge and empathy.
Without telling too much of my business, life has been rough for me the last couple of years, as it has for everyone. The cocktail of school stress, financial stress, health issues, etc. that I found myself stewing in pushed me into the World’s Biggest Creative Rut, the timing of which just so happened to fall disappointingly close to when I finally decided to debut my nerdy lil passion project. But now, a year and some change later, I’m stable and ready to get back to it. Please bear with me as I get back into the groove of writing. My instrument has gone unused for far too long now.
In other news, the second lesson will be posted right after this, so head right there to get a taste of what this blog is actually intended to be and the purpose it’s intended to serve.
And if you’re to take one message with you from this first official bullet point, let it be this; Black Joy is not only entirely singular in its life-sustaining abilities but also undeniably sparse in our environment. So when you run across some in the wild, be sure to sprinkle a little water on it as you pass by. Think of it as a community garden- we all benefit from contributing to its cultivation.
